about

With this CD we celebrate the 10th anniversary of CO2 and the 80th birthday of saxophonist and free jazz pioneer Cel Overberghe. In the mid 70s Cel was one of the founding fathers - together with Fred Van Hove a.o. - of W.I.M. or Werkgroep Improviserende Musici and the legendary Free Music festivals in Antwerp.

For this festive occasion we are delighted and honored to have Peter Jacquemyn and Dirk Wauters on this CD, two musicians with an impressive track record.

Initiated by guitarist Tom Van Overberghe the first concert under the name CO2 took place on December 10, 2007 at El Negocito in Ghent.
Always curious about what was happening on the scene, the 'modus operandi' was to tune in to kindred spirits and invite them to our 'laboratory'.
This resulted in our previous CD 'Intersections', released on El Negocito Records in 2012 (eNR007), featuring Paul Van Gysegem and Giovanni Barcella as 'compagnons de route'.

For quite a long period of time our musical adventures mainly consisted of hosting a series of concerts at Cafe Bato Batu and Cafe Do Re Mi in Antwerp. In addition CO2 also played memorable concerts at Jacques Pelzer Jazz Club in Liège and De Singer in Rijkevorsel where we opened for Rodrigo Amado Motion Trio.

From 2007 until 2017 we shared - and lifted! - the bandstand with the following musicians (in alphabetical order): Yusuke Akai, Christophe Albertijn, Giovanni Barcella, Rory Brown, Thomas Campaert, Gino Coomans, Patrick De Groote, Tsjok Declercq, John Dikeman, Ann Eysermans, Onno Govaert, Erik Heestermans, Gerard Herman, Peter Jacquemyn, Audrey Lauro, Ståle Liavik Solberg, Joe McPhee, Kris Nelissen, Paal Nilssen-Love, Antoine Prawerman, Kristof Roseeuw, Lazara Rosell Albear, Jasper Stadhouders, Paul Van Gysegem, Dirk Wauters and Pierre Michel Zaleski.

We would like to thank all of them for their outstanding and inspirational contributions to our musical escapades.

about

CO2 Antwerp, Belgium

CO2. There are always two sides to a coin.
First: the C and the O are the initials of the name Cel Overberghe - the "2" relates to the fact that with Tom Van Overberghe alongside there are 2 Overberghes in this band.
Second: as a chemical formula CO2 refers to the band as a laboratory. A laboratory of musical 'poisoners', because we love to think outside the box.
